What is a Montage? (New? Start here.)

Montage, n. /mɑnˈtɑʒ/. A group video gift.

A Montage is a series of video messages sent privately from a bunch of people who really care about you, and combined into one surprise, video gift. Most Montages are 10-30 minutes long.

The longest Montage ever was 1 hour and 12 minutes long, and had videos from over 70 people!

Montage Privacy

By default, only the Recipient(s) and the Creator(s) are given access to the final gift. This preserves Contributor privacy.

Creators may also choose to create a public Montage, or a Contributors-only Montage. These options are available when you’re first setting up the Montage, and they can always be changed later from the Settings page of the Creator’s Dashboard.

The privacy setting for the Montage will be clearly displayed on all Invitation Pages.

The Reaction Video

After watching the Montage, it’s a Montage tradition for the recipient(s) to record a Reaction video telling everyone how they felt watching it, and saying thanks. This is automatically sent to everyone who was invited to the Montage.

The Montage process:

First, the Montage is created (https://getmontage.co/create). This takes about 2 minutes. Some information you’ll need to start a Montage is:

  • What’s the occasion?
  • Who’s it for?
  • When is the deadline for submitting videos?
  • Which Creative Prompts would you like to use?
  • Who’s invited? (optional)

Next, the first invitations are sent via email. You can always invite more people later via email, Facebook, SMS, or link-sharing.

When you send invitations through Montage, we help you keep track of when an invitee has opened the invitation, clicked the link, and submitted a video.

After the deadline, the contributions are compiled into the final Montage video with a single click of the “Finalize Montage” button. The Montage Creator has creative control over what makes the final cut. For more information on customization options, click here.

The final Montage video will include:

  • An Intro video, from the Creator, to set the stage and ease the recipient(s) into the gift.
  • Photos, uploaded by the Creator.
  • Videos, uploaded by contributors or the Creator.
  • An Outro video, from the Creator, to seal the deal.

Finally, the Montage is delivered by the Montage Creator. Montages are delivered in a beautiful email template to the recipient(s), with a personal note written by the Montage Creator. The email includes a unique link to the recipient’s private viewing page. When the recipient opens this link and signs into Montage, their account will automatically be given recipient-level access to the Montage. That means they can view the final Montage, record a Reaction Video, delete / re-record the Reaction Video as they see fit, and the Montage will be saved under their account so they can always come back to the site to watch it.

Creator’s also have other options for delivering the Montage. They can (1) copy/paste the special delivery link and send it themselves (email, text, Facebook, etc), (2) they can play the Montage on their own computer (i.e. deliver it in-person), or (3) they can download the video file for offline viewing.

After the recipient(s) watch their Montage, they are prompted to record a Reaction Video. This is the best part! Their video is automatically edited to include music, titles, and a muted video collage that briefly shows everyone who was in the Montage. The Reaction Video is then sent out in a big Thank You email to everyone who contributed (i.e. everyone listed with an email address on the People page of the Creator’s Dashboard).

And that’s all, folks!
