How does the background music work?

How does background music work for Montages?

Background music is automatically applied to the final Montage when it is compiled.

Why is there background music?

In short, it makes people sound better. It also unifies what would otherwise be a somewhat hodgepodge collection of videos.

Our intention is for the background music to elevate the words in each person’s video message, to make the Montage more engaging to watch, and to tie all the different video entries together into one cohesive whole.

What songs are used?

The collection of songs we use are the result of years of testing with thousands of Montages, and our best effort to create a balanced, subtle, and universally palatable emotional arc for the final production. The recipe is tried and true - trust us!

Our soundtrack proudly features songs by artists Poddington Bear, among others, who’s discography can be found here.

As the Creator of the Montage, can I add my own background music instead of using the music you provide?

Unfortunately, for a long list of technical and legal reasons, we can not offer custom background music. We really wish we could.

That said, if you’re willing to put in some effort in order to add your own music, then there is one workaround we can suggest. Note: You’ll have to do some basic video editing outside of Montage.

How to add custom background music, DIY style:

  1. Disable background music for the entire Montage (see below)
  2. Re-Compile the Montage
  3. Download the full Montage video file (from the Settings page)
  4. Import the video file into any video editor (e.g. iMovie)
  5. Add your own music tracks
  6. Export the file, and Voíla!

The entire process usually takes about an hour or two.

If you’ve finished your custom-music video, and you’d like to upload it back onto Montage, (i.e. so you can deliver it to the recipient using our dedicated viewing page and they can record a Reaction Video) just email us and we’ll assist you in replacing the original finalized Montage with your own file.

Can I turn off background music?

Yes! You can opt out of the background music by removing it from any individual video, OR you can remove it from the entire Montage. The latter can only be done by the Creator of the Montage.

How to disable background music for the ENTIRE Montage:

  • Go to the Settings page of your Creator’s Dashboard, then under General Settings, flip the switch on the Enable/Disable Background Music button.

How to disable background music for a SINGLE video:

  • If you are the Creator (i.e. organizer) of the Montage:

    • From the Videos page of your Creator’s Dashboard, tap/click on any video entry, then select Edit Background Music, and Remove Background Music. (Note: This only removes background music for that individual video.)
  • If you are a Contributor (i.e. the person who submitted the video):

    • After you’ve submitted your video, tap/click on it, then select Edit Background Music > Remove Background Music.
    • To find a video you’ve submitted, go to My Montages, find the intended Montage, then go to the My Entries page. From a computer, you can also view your videos on the sidebar of the Prompts page.

What if the music volume is too loud in the Sneak Peak preview, and I can’t hear people’s voices?

Don’t worry. The volume of the background music will be lower in the final Montage than it is in the Sneak Peek Preview.

When you compile the final Montage, our automagic video editor will detect volume levels and do its best to normalize the audio levels across the entire Montage, and it will also lower the volume of background music automatically while people are speaking. If the background music sounds too loud in the Sneak Peak preview, don’t panic. 99% of the time, it will end up sounding fine in the final Montage.

What if the music is too loud in the final Montage?

If, after you’ve compiled the Montage, a few of the videos are too quiet to hear over the background music, then we recommend going back to the Videos page and, turning background music off for each of the videos that are too quiet. (See instructions above.)

Once you’ve turned background music off for each of the problematic (i.e. too quiet) videos, then you’ll need to recompile the Montage by scrolling to the bottom of the Videos page and selecting “Re-Compile Montage.”

You can re-compile the Montage as many times as you’d like (for free) so feel free to experiment!
